What is Zwift?

Recently I have been learning about interactive narratives and the several types that we use in our everyday lives like video games, apps, and other technologies. That got me thinking about a new digital media platform that has generated some interest in the running community called Zwift. I don't know much about the platform, but I thought it would be the perfect time to investigate it and other similar technologies.

Requirements

So what exactly does this new technology require? First, you're going to have to buy a $25 Zwift pod that will attach to your shoe. This is a bluetooth technology that will sink to a smart device. Second, a TV or tablet will be needed to display the game on a screen and that device will need bluetooth capabilities. Finally, you'll need to have either a gym membership with access to the treadmill or a treadmill at home. You can use this product outside, but the purpose is for indoor running.

Runners Guide to Zwift

Now that we have our necessary equipment lets dive right into the specs of this technology. The YouTube channel SMART Bike Trainers describes Zwift as a multiplayer online application that allows players from all over the world to compete against one another in the sport of running. He describes it as "simple" and really easy to use for the everyday athlete. He even goes into detail on how elite marathon runners have adopted the technology into their training sessions to improve there performances. See photos below for an idea of how the platform looks

Game On

To start, you will need to create a character on the Zwift application. The character will be given a name and can choose from a countless set of clothes. Next, pair the device and select one of Zwifts routes. Distances range from 3-26.3 miles and elevation varies per route is chosen. You can set up the run so that other friends can appear on your screen at the same time. If you think you're ready for a challenge you can select a race and compete against other athletes in a virtual 5K or go for a half marathon.

Overall, I think this is a great application and a new piece of technology. It takes the aspect of running and exercise and combines it with a video game character. If I had a treadmill at home, I would run out to the store and pick up one of these devices to try for myself. I hope to see more of this technology in the future because I believe that it can change the sport of running forever and include more non runners.
